Militair Manoeuvre F, also known as Frühlingserwachen, was a military operation carried out by the German Army during World War II in March 1945. The operation was launched in an attempt to break through the Soviet lines in Hungary and relieve the encircled German forces in Budapest.

Frühlingserwachen, which translates to “Spring Awakening” in English, was one of the last major offensives undertaken by the Germans on the Eastern Front. The operation was led by the newly appointed Commander-in-Chief of Army Group South, Field Marshal Ferdinand Schörner, and involved a force of over 200,000 German troops.

The Germans hoped that a successful breakthrough in Hungary would not only relieve the besieged forces in Budapest but also disrupt the Soviet advance into Austria and Czechoslovakia. However, the operation ultimately proved to be unsuccessful due to a combination of factors, including strong Soviet defenses, logistical difficulties, and poor weather conditions.

Despite initial gains made by the German forces, the Soviet counterattacks quickly turned the tide of the battle. The Red Army launched a massive offensive, utilizing their numerical superiority and overwhelming the German defenders. The Germans were eventually forced to retreat, and the operation ended in a decisive Soviet victory.

Frühlingserwachen was a costly operation for the Germans, with heavy casualties on both sides. The failure of the operation also marked a significant turning point in the war on the Eastern Front, as it demonstrated the declining strength and morale of the German Army in the final months of the war.

Overall, Militair Manoeuvre F (Frühlingserwaken) was a desperate and ultimately unsuccessful attempt by the German forces to reverse the course of the war on the Eastern Front. Despite their best efforts, the Germans were unable to achieve their objectives, and the operation served as a grim reminder of the eventual defeat that awaited them in the closing stages of World War II.
