make-up zoals (niet) in Stendhals roman Le et le Noir. (5?

In Stendhal’s novel Le Rouge et le Noir, the theme of make-up plays a significant role in the development of the main character, Julien Sorel. Make-up is used as a symbol of deception and manipulation throughout the novel, highlighting the complex nature of human relationships and societal expectations.

From the very beginning of the novel, it is clear that Julien Sorel is a master of disguise. He frequently uses make-up to conceal his true emotions and intentions, allowing him to navigate the rigid social hierarchy of early 19th-century France. In fact, the title of the novel itself, which translates to “The Red and the Black,” can be seen as a reference to the dual nature of Julien’s character – the red representing passion and emotion, and the black representing deception and manipulation.

One of the most striking examples of make-up in the novel occurs during Julien’s affair with Madame de Rênal. Julien uses make-up to enhance his appearance and charm Madame de Rênal, effectively manipulating her emotions and leading her to believe that he loves her. This deception ultimately leads to tragedy, as Julien’s true intentions are revealed and Madame de Rênal’s reputation is ruined.

However, make-up is not always used as a tool of deception in the novel. In some cases, make-up is used to empower characters and challenge societal norms. For example, Mathilde de La Mole, a wealthy and privileged young woman, uses make-up to assert her independence and autonomy. By wearing bold and unconventional make-up, Mathilde defies the expectations of her class and asserts her individuality.

Overall, make-up in Le Rouge et le Noir serves as a powerful symbol of the complexities of human relationships and the masks we wear to navigate society. It highlights the ways in which appearances can be deceiving and the importance of looking beyond the surface to uncover the truth. Make-up is not simply a tool of vanity or beauty in Stendhal’s novel, but a reflection of the intricate and often contradictory nature of human nature.
