Hoe heet de Engelse collega van Sinterklaas?

Posted on June 12, 2024 by Pulse

In the Netherlands, Sinterklaas is a beloved figure who brings gifts and joy to children during the holiday season. But did you know that Sinterklaas has an English counterpart as well?

Known as Father Christmas or Santa Claus, the English colleague of Sinterklaas is a jolly old man who travels the world on Christmas Eve delivering presents to children. While Sinterklaas is based on the historical figure of Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas is a more modern creation, drawing inspiration from various sources including the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition.

Like Sinterklaas, Father Christmas is typically depicted as a kindly old man with a long white beard, red suit, and hat. He is said to live at the North Pole with his team of elves and flying reindeer, including the famous Rudolph. Children are encouraged to write letters to Father Christmas with their wish lists, and on Christmas Eve, he makes his rounds, sliding down chimneys to leave presents under the tree.

While there are some differences between Sinterklaas and Father Christmas, such as the date of their gift-giving (Sinterklaas arrives on December 5th, while Father Christmas visits on December 24th), both figures share a common goal of spreading joy and magic during the holiday season.

So next time you’re celebrating Christmas in the UK, remember to leave out some milk and cookies for Father Christmas, just as you would leave a carrot for Sinterklaas’s horse, Amerigo. And whether you believe in Sinterklaas or Father Christmas, one thing is for certain – the spirit of giving and generosity they represent is something that transcends borders and brings people together in the spirit of the season.
