Posted on November 30, 2024 by Pulse

Ernst Van Doe Maar, also known as Ernst Jansz, is a Dutch musician and songwriter who rose to fame as a member of the popular Dutch band Doe Maar. Born on May 24, 1948 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Ernst’s passion for music began at a young age. He started playing the piano as a child and later learned to play the accordion, guitar, and saxophone.

In the late 1970s, Ernst co-founded the band Doe Maar with fellow musicians Piet Dekker, Jan Hendriks, and Carel Copier. The band quickly gained popularity in the Dutch music scene with their unique blend of reggae, ska, and pop music. Their catchy tunes and socially conscious lyrics resonated with audiences and propelled them to stardom.

As the band’s primary songwriter and lead vocalist, Ernst played a key role in shaping the sound and message of Doe Maar. His introspective lyrics often touched on themes of love, politics, and social issues, earning the band a reputation for being both musically innovative and socially conscious.

Doe Maar’s success reached its peak in the early 1980s, with hit songs like “Doris Day,” “Is Dit Alles,” and “Belle Hélène” dominating the charts. The band’s energetic live performances and charismatic stage presence further solidified their status as one of the most popular acts in the Netherlands.

However, the pressures of fame and the band’s hectic touring schedule took a toll on Ernst, leading him to leave Doe Maar in 1984. He embarked on a solo career, releasing several albums that showcased his versatility as a musician and songwriter. Ernst continued to explore different musical styles, drawing inspiration from his Indonesian heritage and incorporating elements of folk, blues, and world music into his work.

In recent years, Ernst has reunited with his former bandmates for special reunion concerts and anniversary tours, delighting fans with their classic hits and timeless sound. Despite the passage of time, Doe Maar’s music remains as relevant and beloved as ever, a testament to Ernst’s enduring talent and creativity.

Ernst Van Doe Maar is a true musical icon whose contributions to the Dutch music scene have left an indelible mark. His passion for music and commitment to social change continue to inspire audiences around the world, making him a beloved figure in the music industry.
