In Werking + Dringend Verzoeken = Verafgoden?

Posted on July 9, 2024 by Pulse

The Dutch language is full of interesting phrases and expressions that can sometimes be difficult to translate directly into English. One such example is the combination of the words “In werking” and “Dringend verzoeken,” which together can be roughly translated as “In operation + Urgent request.” This phrase is often used in a somewhat exaggerated manner to convey the idea of something being worshipped or idolized.

When we break down the individual words in this phrase, we can see why it has such a powerful connotation. “In werking” means in operation or functioning, implying that something is active and effective. “Dringend verzoeken” means an urgent request or plea, suggesting a strong desire or need for something.

When these two elements are combined, it creates a sense of urgency and importance that can lead to the idea of something being worshipped or idolized. It suggests that whatever is being referred to is not only active and effective but also highly valued and sought after.

In a society that often places a high value on efficiency and productivity, it’s not uncommon for people to become so focused on achieving their goals that they start to idolize certain things or behaviors. This phrase can serve as a reminder to step back and consider whether our priorities are in balance and if we are truly valuing what is most important in life.

While the literal translation of “In werking + Dringend verzoeken” may not fully capture the depth of its meaning, it serves as a powerful reminder to reflect on what we truly value and prioritize in our lives. It encourages us to consider whether we are worshipping things that are ultimately fleeting and temporary, or if we are focusing on what truly matters in the long run.
