Posted on July 16, 2024 by Pulse

“De Zangeres Is Eerste Luitenant” is a Dutch phrase that translates to “The Singer is First Lieutenant” in English. This phrase has been used to describe the unique and impressive career of Dutch singer and military officer, Jetty Paerl.

Jetty Paerl was born in Amsterdam in 1921 and began her singing career at a young age. She quickly gained popularity in the Netherlands and in other European countries for her powerful and emotive voice. However, Paerl’s career took an unexpected turn when World War II broke out.

During the war, Paerl joined the Dutch resistance and used her singing talents to entertain and uplift the spirits of those affected by the conflict. She also worked as a spy, using her performances as a cover to gather information and pass messages to the resistance. Paerl’s bravery and dedication to her country earned her the rank of first lieutenant in the Dutch army, hence the nickname “De Zangeres Is Eerste Luitenant.”

After the war, Paerl continued her singing career and achieved international success. She represented the Netherlands in the first ever Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 and finished in second place with the song “De Vogels Van Holland.” Paerl went on to release numerous albums and perform in concerts around the world, showcasing her remarkable vocal talent and captivating stage presence.

In addition to her music career, Paerl also continued to serve in the Dutch military, rising through the ranks to become a captain before retiring in 1971. Throughout her life, she remained dedicated to both her passion for music and her commitment to her country, earning her the respect and admiration of many.

“De Zangeres Is Eerste Luitenant” is a fitting tribute to Jetty Paerl, a talented singer and fearless military officer who defied expectations and made a lasting impact on both the music industry and her country. Her remarkable story serves as a reminder of the power of music to inspire, uplift, and unite people in times of hardship and adversity.
