In 1940, the former leader of the Communist Party of the Netherlands (CPN), Paul de Groot, took on a new role as the editor-in-chief of the underground resistance newspaper De Waarheid. This significant shift in his career came at a crucial moment in Dutch history, as the country was under Nazi occupation during World War II.

De Groot, who had previously been the leader of the CPN before it was banned by the German occupiers, was a prominent figure in the Dutch communist movement. Despite the party’s outlawed status, De Groot remained committed to the cause of resistance against the Nazi regime and saw the creation of a clandestine newspaper as a vital tool in the fight against oppression.

De Waarheid, which translates to “The Truth” in English, became a beacon of hope for many Dutch citizens who were seeking accurate information and a voice of resistance during a time of censorship and propaganda. The newspaper published articles denouncing the Nazi occupation, promoting solidarity among Dutch citizens, and providing updates on the activities of the resistance movement.

Under De Groot’s leadership, De Waarheid became a powerful tool for spreading anti-Nazi propaganda and rallying support for the resistance. The newspaper was distributed illegally throughout the country, often at great risk to those involved in its production and distribution. Despite the dangers involved, De Groot and his team of dedicated journalists worked tirelessly to ensure that the truth about the occupation was brought to light.

De Groot’s tenure as editor-in-chief of De Waarheid came to an end in 1945, when the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands finally came to an end. The newspaper continued to be published after the war, serving as a voice for social justice and democracy in post-war Dutch society.

Paul de Groot’s role as the head of De Waarheid during the dark days of Nazi occupation was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the principles of freedom, democracy, and resistance. His leadership of the underground newspaper played a crucial role in shaping the narrative of the resistance movement and providing a platform for the voices of those who sought to defy the oppressive regime.

In recognition of his contributions to the resistance movement, Paul de Groot was posthumously awarded the Medal of Resistance by the Dutch government in 1989. His legacy as a fearless leader and champion of freedom continues to inspire generations of Dutch citizens to stand up against tyranny and injustice.
